Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Thou infuses chaotic, sludge and doom metal with punk rock and diy ideals. I previously featured the band as the DH monthly artist last May, and they've only gotten better since. There's not much I can say about Thou that hasn't been said already. They've epitomized the concept of a self sustaining entity through independent releases and tours; all with the same amount proffesionalism and vigor as some of the more high-profile garbage that gets shoved down your throat every day.
Musically, the band utilizes downtrodden progressions reminiscent of Eyehategod, with sparse, peaks of hope akin to Pelican, wrapped in dirty, albeit bluesy, Southern-style riffing and dirges. Everything about Thou is a hideous, depressive, visceral, and deeply personal experience. It's that emotional and mental connection that I've always been hard pressed to find in modern sludge; and what makes Thou stand out in so many circles. Whether it be through the music itself, lyrically, or through their art - there's just something about them that strikes an unnerving, and yet comforting chord.
The amount of time and effort this band has put into their music and releases is absolutely staggering. 2007 and '08 saw the release of their demo, Tyrant LP (12" & tour cdr), it's cd repress with The Retaliation of the Immutable Force of Nature EP, Malfeasance/Retribution EP 10", Thrive & Decay split 7" with Black September, We Pass Like Night, From Land To Land split cassette with Leech, Peasant LP, To Carry A Stone EP 5" (cd repress with Peasant), and the proper 12" release of Retaliation. To add to an already untouchable discography, they've lined up another 14 (currently) releases; including the vinyl repress of Tyrant through Southern Lord, the vinyl release of their Leech split, and cassette releases of both full lengths.
I'm including Thou's 2007 demo, Tyrant LP, and the To Carry A Stone EP. Note, you can download all recorded material on the band's official website. While some of Thou's releases may not be available/the easiest to find, they're more than worth any monetary value attached.
